Here at Knot Another Hat we are excited to help contribute to the Welcome Blanket Project
. The movement aims to connect people already living here in the US with new immigrants through stories and handmade blankets, providing both symbolic and literal comfort and warmth. By participating in this project, people will also come together to talk about immigration policy and how it affects real-live people.
Many of you know this subject is very close to my heart, and I couldn't be more proud of and thankful for my customers who have expressed a desire to contribute.
Our plan is to collect squares here at the shop from now through August 23rd
. We will then have a "come together" party here at the shop on Wednesday, August 23rd from anytime in the afternoon until 7:30pm
to attach the squares together into blankets. We will continue to assemble any leftover squares during Knit Night August 30th. We will send them off to the coordinators, who will be putting the blankets on display at the Smart Museum at the University of Chicago. In November and December the blankets will be dispersed to new immigrants.
The blanket squares should follow the prescribed pattern (see links below), but any colors are acceptable as long as the yarn is superwash. Here at the shop, if you buy any of the below listed superwash yarns to use for blanket squares, we will give you $1 credit for every 2 squares you turn in with yarn purchased at the shop.* If you choose to use worsted weight yarn you can easily double it to achieve the bulky gauge the pattern calls for.
